You ask a resident of The Sutherland Shire where they live, most likely they will answer ‘God’s country’. The meaning for most – it is in their opinion the best place to live on earth!

The Sutherland Shire is made up of many suburbs and collectively make an amazing area to call home.

The Sutherland Shire is located at the southern coastal border of the Sydney metropolitan area, about 26 kilometres from the Sydney CBD.

It includes the suburbs and localities of Alfords Point, Bangor, Barden Ridge, Bonnet Bay, Bundeena, Burraneer, Caringbah, Caringbah South, Como, Cronulla, Dolans Bay, Engadine, Grays Point, Greenhills Beach, Gymea, Gymea Bay, Heathcote, Holsworthy (part), Illawong, Jannali, Kangaroo Point, Kareela, Kirrawee, Kurnell, Lilli Pilli, Loftus, Lucas Heights, Maianbar, Menai, Miranda, Oyster Bay, Port Hacking, Royal National Park, Sandy Point, Sutherland, Sylvania, Sylvania Waters, Taren Point, Waterfall, Woolooware, Woronora, Woronora Dam (part), Woronora Heights, Yarrawarrah and Yowie Bay.

So, the traditional custodians of this land the Dharawal People.

Reasons to live in the Sutherland Shire

It has been called Sydney’s best kept secret, and for good reason. So, it is luring people with a combination of affordable waterfront properties, a stunning coastline, countless parks, quality schooling, amazing national park tracks and attractions and a comparatively laid back lifestyle.

However, this has turned it into something of a property hotspot, and seen the demographic of the region change. It is not difficult to see why ? Where else in Sydney can you buy a four bedroom family homes with a decent backyard for around $1 million? And it is near the water!

If you are after green space and the great outdoors then you have the second oldest national park, the Royal National Park, right on your doorstep. Access it by road or hop on the ferry at Bundeena for miles of bushwalking and unspoilt beaches. Needless to say there are also ample opportunities for all manner of watersports on the area’s beaches and waterways, including surfing, sailing and boating. There is an abundance of parks – many with updated play equipment, ample shopping opportunities – including the big brands and specialty stores at Miranda Westfield and the boutique offerings of many small businesses in all areas of the Sutherland Shire. High achieving local schools, sports of all kinds and dining that caters for all tastes.

Transport options in the Sutherland Shire

Moreover, there is a good network of public transport throughout the Shire, with comprehensive bus routes serving most of the region’s suburbs.

In terms of commuting from the Sutherland Shire, trains – on the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line – take around 50 minutes from Cronulla station to Central Station, while the same journey is around 40 minutes by road without major traffic. Though realistically, it would be wise to plan for longer at peak times.

As a result, by road the Princes Highway provides access to the city (north) and the M1 to Wollongong and the South Coast.
