Sutherland

The Sydney suburb where millennials are putting down roots

Ranked in the top 20 of Domain’s most recent Liveable Sydney study, Sutherland is a remarkably well-connected suburb. Located only 26 kilometres south of the CBD it is proving to be a great place for the millennials in to put down roots.

Our very own Sebastian Viteri Founder of Hill & Viteri Property says Sutherland has had a changing of the guard over the past decade. With older residents moving on and young couples moving in. They are drawn here by reasonable property prices in a convenient, leafy location.

“I grew up in Sutherland, and 30 years ago it was pretty rough, but in the past 10 years, it has really gentrified,” he says. “We’re seeing more people move here from further up the train line, and there are better restaurants and cafes.”

Sebastian describes the properties in the suburb, which is popular with investors, as “very rentable”. Offering low vacancies and good returns. Residents love the excellent public transport, with a 30-minute train commute to the city, and 15 minutes to the beach at Cronulla.

Things to See & Do

The heritage-listed Royal National Park, affectionately known as “Nasho” by the locals, is on the doorstep. Forming Sutherland’s southern border and offering plenty of opportunities for outdoor pursuits. The great outdoors is on magnificent display at the Royal National Park. Go take a walk, swim, surf, fish or birdwatch.

You can also take the Prince Edward Park Bushwalk to the Woronora River. As the administrative centre for the Sutherland Shire, the suburb plays host to a library, the Leisure Centre with a gym and multiple pools, and the Multi-Purpose Centre. The Shire Farmers’ Market has been a very welcomed addition to the area. Happening each Saturday morning in Flora Street Council carpark.

Great places to Eat & Drink

Head into Mike’s Grill at The Royal Hotel to feast on a delicious rump or head to The Greek Islands Taverna for traditional Greek favourites.  Alphabet St is a great place for modern Asian cuisine.

Across from the station, Left Bower serves up homemade cakes, while Flora Street Espresso is a top spot for light breakfasts. Cafe 2232 is open from 6.30am for the early birds, and The Station Patisserie has won many fans with its bread and cakes.
